Pumpkin Spice Season

We all know someone who spends all year waiting for “pumpkin spice season” to roll back around. Whether you prefer your pumpkin spice in the form of a pie, a coffee, or even a donut, the flavor is available to us in North Texas almost anywhere this time of the year. But did you know that pumpkin can be a great, healthy addition to your diet this time of year? Pumpkin supports heart health by offering a high content of fiber, Vitamin C, and potassium. Though a sugary latte or pie may not be the healthiest way to capitalize on these great nutrients, we have a couple of other suggestions that may interest you. Adding a bit of canned pumpkin to your morning smoothie or oatmeal is a great way to incorporate the classic fall flavor into your breakfast. Roasting pumpkin in the oven can also provide a delicious side dish, or an ingredient in fall-inspired soups. It can even be incorporated into your pasta sauce for a delicious take on macaroni and cheese. You can even impress your doctor by blending some pumpkin up in your post-workout protein shake!  If you need to please your sweet tooth, pumpkin puree can actually be a healthier alternative ingredient in cheesecakes or cookies – and pumpkin-based desserts are bound to be party-pleasers at get-togethers!!
